About 60 Nigerian universities will be participating in the 13th edition of the West Africa University Games (WAUG) to be hosted by University of Ilorin from September 29 to October 9, 2011.
According to the Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Professor Is-haq Oloyede during a stakeholders forum in Lagos, represented by the deputy VC and Local Organizing Committee (LOC) chairman, Prof. A.B Olayemi said the games will attract over 5000 athletes from 88 universities from the West African sub region competiting for laurels in 15 events.
“The WAUG Games have been sustained over the years because of its importance. The Games are aimed at fostering greater friendhip among youths of West African sub-region in addition to providing an opportunity for West African universities to contribute to the development of highly-skilled elite athletes among their students as done by universities the world over,” Prof. Oloyede said.
The VC stressed the determination of the university to ensure a successful hosting as way of demostrating the school commitment to excellence in all endeavour addeing that the LOC has swung into action to ensure that the event is not only huge success but the best ever organized by any university in West Africa.
Also speaking at the event, WAUG Director General, Prof. Lasun Emiola said the games will be one of the best ever in the history of WAUG.
“It’s going to be one of the best, peacesful and elegant. I’m sure a lot of records will be broken based on the preparation of the host university and the visiting schools,” he added.
The Games started in 1965 and took place between University of Ibadan and Legon University in Nigeria and since then grown in creasingly stronger by the year, attracting athletes from the fifteen countries that make up the region.
