Ex-Ghana winger Yaw Preko has hailed Stephen Appiah’s decision to retire from international football, insisting the influential midfielder quit at the right time.

The 30-year-old retired from the national team after the 2010 World Cup in August and is now focusing on his club career with Italian side Cesena.
Preko says after leading the west African nation to two consecutive World Cups with impressive records there was nothing left for Appiah to achieve.
“Stephen has done a lot for the nation. He returned from injury when everybody thought it was all over for him and he took us to two World Cups,” the Black Satellites assistant coach told Goal.com.
“So we should respect his retirement. I’m happy he stopped at a stage nobody would abuse him, because if you don’t quit at the right time, people start comparing your present to your past. The respect that they have for you would then pass away.”

The former Black Stars forward suggested that a testimonial match between the present Black Stars and the old squad be organized to honour the “Tornado,” as Appiah is affectionately called.
“I’m sure the stadium would be packed,” he stated.

Local media reports say the Ghana FA is negotiating with the Argentina FA to host the La Albiceleste in Accra sometime in June to honour one of the most decorated former captains of the Black Stars.
