GOVERNOR Chibuike Amaechi yesterday offered to use his February salary to clear up tenement rate owed by the landlord of the building where the campaign office of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate of the state, Dr Abiye Sekibo is located.
Obio Akpo local government last week sealed up the campaign office owing to what it termed default on payment of tenement rate on the building. The local government said it secured a court order to carry out the action.
The development sparked up protest from the governorship candidate of the Action Congress Party of Nigeria. A press statement issued by the campaign office of the candidate accused the state governor of being behind the action of the local government council. An allegation the governor stoutly denied through his acting Chief Press secretary, Mr Blessing Wikina.
Meantime, the governor who spoke yesterday at his campaign rally for Obio Akpo local government area said he had directed the state’s Accountant General to release his February salary to clear up the tenement rate.
According to him, his action was predicated on the need for all parties contesting the April governorship election to enjoy a level playing ground just as he again reiterated that he had no hand in the action of the local government.
“Let the Accountant —General use my salary to pay the tenement rate for the Action Congress of Nigeria so that Obio/Akpor local government can re-open the closed campaign office. I decided to pay the tenement rate for them so that they can begin their campaign.
“I believe that there should be a level playing ground for all political parties to campaign for the April election. But, I still maintain my stand that I had no hand in the closure of the ACN office. It was an order from a court”, he said.
The governor also spoke about the programme of his government in the local government. He said so far among other things his administration had built nine health centres and nineteen model primary schools in Obio Akpo local government. Assuring that when voted in he would do more in the area.
Rivers state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Gods power Ake also paid glowing tribute to the governor. He said even opposition parties in the state had come to terms with the governor’s performance record.
