Chelsea‘s record transfer signing Fernando Torres has admitted that it will take time for him to adapt to playing with his new team-mates and in a different role to the one he had at Liverpool.

The Spaniard has partnered Nicolas Anelka in recent starts, but has also been deployed in a wider position to accommodate Didier Drogba and admits that it is up to him to adjust to Carlo Ancelotti’s plans and show his class after failing to score in four appearances for his new club.

The 26-year-old, who took no time to get into the goals at Anfield after leading the line with Steven Gerrard usually positioned in behind, understands that the best players have to be flexible in how they play, especially at a club with many attacking options.

He told Chelsea Magazine: “It’s important to understand the style of football your team is playing, how you are involved in the system and everything.

“This always take some time. But, I think, once you get it, everything becomes much easier.

“The important thing is to have different options in the way you play.”

And for Torres, adding versatility to his game can only be benefical.

“If you want to be a top player, you have to be able to play in all these situations and I’m sure here at Chelsea I will play in different positions sometimes,” he said.

“I’m ready for this because I want to play where the manager asks me to, I know the competition is high here.”

His £50 million switch from Merseyside to London raised eyebrows, but the player has gone on record as saying that he had to do leave for the sake of his career, having won nothing in club football, and maintains that he made the right decision to leave Liverpool.

He continued: “I think when you make a decision this important you must be sure you can do it, otherwise it’s not worth moving to a club like Chelsea.

“You have to have confidence in yourself and you have to work harder than everyone else because you are the new player to arrive at the club.

“I have confidence in myself, I have confidence in this team and I have tried to become involved in everything this team is doing from the first day.”

The World Cup winner revealed that he was “shy” ahead of his first session training with his new team-mate.

“But here the atmosphere was very good, they have made it very easy for me,” he said.
