“In 2010, DreamWorks Animation became the first studio to release three feature-length CG animated films in a single year,” CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg observed during a conference call on Thursday. ” How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek Forever After and Megamind together grossed approximately $1.6 billion worldwide — the company’s biggest year ever at the box office,” he added. DreamWorks Animation saw $784.8 million of that amount (presumably the remainder went to theater owners), producing a profit of $170.6 million, up 13 percent from 2009. In response to a question, Katzenberg said that while the final Shrek feature did not perform as well as expected on DVD, Dragon exceeded expectations, thereby proving, he said, that “there’s still an appetite for high-quality content in home video.”
