Unconfirmed Reports reaching peacefmonline.com say a leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been picked up by the Bureau of National Investigations for questioning.
According to sources, Dr. Anthony Osei Akoto, former Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Tafo Panokrono, at about 5:45pm honoured a police invitation by availing himself to be questioned.
He was said to be accompanied by his lawyer Atta Akyea, NPP MP for Abuakwa South.
Though it is still unclear the nature of the invitation, Dr. Osei Akoto has been under investigation for allegedly divesting 20 per cent government shares in the Ghana Oil Palm Development Company (GOPDC).
The former minister has been in-and-out of the offices of the Bureau of National Investigations over the past two weeks in an attempt by the BNI to gather information that could lead to his prosecution.
Sources told peacefmonline.com that the investigation however, stalled, after the ex-minister allegedly refused to cooperate with the BNI over allegations that the investigative body was leaking confidential sources to pro-government newspapers.
Dr. Anthony Osei Akoto has refused to go public on the matter but last week, his lawyer, Atta Akyea insisted his client is being wrongfully persecuted for his ‘F’ grading of government.
Another school of thought also has it that this is perhaps a diversionary tactic by government to take away the public’s attention from the planned demonstration by the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) scheduled for Wednesday, January 26th.
