It was a case of luvly bubbly for six of Barcelona’s stars as they flew home from a gala evening in Zurich. Lionel Messi led the champagne toast after pipping Barca team-mates Xavi and Andres Iniesta to the new FIFA Ballon d’Or award.
But there was no need for the beaten duo to drown their sorrows as they were named alongside the 23-year-old Argie in the FIFA/FIFPRO world XI.
Fellow Barcelona stars Carles Puyol, David Villa and Gerard Pique also indulged in a drop of the good stuff after making it into the line-up.
And as Arsenal may discover in the Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s players really are the toast of the town.
