Konadu Squeezes Mills

Array

Nana Konadu Agyemang RawlingsTHE OFFICE of the President has been boxed into a corner, unable to fathom how to handle former First Lady, Nana Konadu’s ambition to succeed Prof. Atta Mills as President of the Republic of Ghana.
While it has become clear that Nana Konadu is on a serious campaign to become the flag-bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), her position as wife of the party’s founder and incumbent first national chairman of the party makes her a thorny subject to deal with.
Nana Konadu may not have uttered a word in public but an official website rallying support for her campaign to become the 2012 Presidential candidate of the NDC has unnerved the Presidency, with Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, aide to the President, throwing his weight about that nobody in the party could beat President Mills in a presidential primary.
Aside Nii Lantey’s brag, the rest of the Mills loyalists in government have gone dumb and the Presidency is said to be instigating the party to get Nana Konadu to distance herself from the ongoing campaign till nominations are opened.
The campaign website, apparently being run by a group of young men calling themselves ‘Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings’ (FONKAR), has some of the most exciting photos of Mrs. Rawlings. Some of the poses are also ‘presidential’ in nature and design.
The photos, fourteen in all, capture Mrs. Rawlings dressed in different attires and posing like a fashion model with a charming smile. She had a well-powdered face with red lipsticks and blue eye shadow.
In some of the photos, she appears like a professional woman dressed in designer suits and trousers, while she appeared in other photos smartly dressed in a ‘kaba and slit’.
Though the NDC, as a party, has made some feeble threats on persons who start campaigning ahead of the party’s time table and opening of nominations, Dela Coffie, spokesperson of FONKAR, has justified the launch of the website and admitted it as a clear campaign for Nana Konadu’s presidential ambition.
Dela has also called the bluff of NDC Chairman Dr. Kwabena Adjei, who said the party would fish out and deal with the ‘unseen’ persons who are campaigning for Mrs. Rawlings without her consent.
Mrs. Rawlings has not distanced herself from the activities of FONKAR. Though she is the type who does not hesitate to respond to issues bordering on her name and personality, she has remained silent on this particular matter.
Reports say she has been spotted in several parts of the country with some members of FONKAR in what is believed to be a campaign tour.
DAILY GUIDE can also report that several persons who have donated to FONKAR have received letters of appreciation that had what is believed to be the signature of Nana Konadu.
The group has also commissioned an opinion poll about the popularity of President Mills in the party, which gives a damning verdict on the President.
