The Ashanti Regional Youth Working Committee of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at Alhaji Iddrisu Bature, describing his recent disclosure that
President Mills may resign ahead of the 2012 elections as uncalled for.
Speaking on Angel FM, a Kumasi-based radio station on Wednesday, the NDC top gun disclosed that President Mills may step down before the forthcoming elections, should the bashing he is receiving from some elements in the ruling party continue.
A statement signed by the Acting Secretary of the committee, Onassis Kobby Rosley, described Alhaji Bature’s disclosure as unfortunate and needless. According to the committee, Alhaji Bature’s exposé was in bad taste because it fueled the seemingly uneasiness within the ruling party.
The committee also expressed displeasure about comments made by one Sacut Ameng-Etego on the same station to the effect that President Mills had demonstrated a high degree of ungratefulness to the Rawlingses.
Sacut, who is the General Secretary of Youth for Leadership, made several disparaging remarks about President Mills on the radio station, including his assertion that President Mills was not giving ex-President Rawlings the needed respect because he (Mills) is not a dyed-in-the-wool member of the party.
Sacut also noted that ardent members of the party who believe in the ideology of former President Rawlings will make sure that President Mills is stripped off his NDC membership card.
“We are not against free speech, expressions and criticisms but as a responsible and well cultured youth group, we will encourage and welcome constructive criticisms for the nation’s forward movement and not derogatory comments like that of Sacut,†the statement noted.
Observing that Sacut is not a member of the NDC in the Ashanti Region as he claims, the committee, on behalf of the party, apologized to Ghanaians for the uncomplimentary and misguided remarks made about President Mills by Sacut. “We are informed Sacut claims to be a resident of Kumasi and a member of the NDC. But we do not know him to be a member of the NDC in the region and for that matter our committee does not have anything to do with such a ‘black sheep’,†the statement stressed.
The committee said it was unfortunate that Sacut and his likes, for some time now, have been creating an erroneous impression that the Ashanti Region was rebelling against the Prof Mills-led government. “That impression is palpably false and can only be conceived by people like Sacut,†the committee indicated.
“We want to emphatically state that we have an absolute confidence and trust in the President and that we will forever remain resolute and committed to his presidency,†the committee promised.
