This is the second time in less than a year that fire has destroyed the market.Fire has gutted parts of the Kumasi Central Market destroying goods and property running into several thousands of Ghana cedis.

The fire is believed to have started around 4:00 am this morning and lasted for several hours because of inaccessibility to the area.

District Fire Officer at the Komfo Anokye Hospital, D.O.C. Agyei Fofie, who led a team of fire personnel to the scene said the haphazard arrangement of structures at the market made it difficult to put out the fire.

He appealed to city authorities to redesign the market for easy accessibility to fire tenders.

“We face difficulty to get access to the fire ground,” Mr Fofie said.

This is the second time in less than a year that fire has destroyed the market.

Last year, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Kofi Opuku Manu, promised to redevelop the market after a committee set up to investigate the cause of the blaze there recommended redevelopment of the facility.

That, however, is yet to materialize.
