Court Freezes Ketu NDC Polls

Modestus AhiableTHE CONFUSION that rocked the Ketu South National Democratic Congress (NDC) Conference last Friday has taken a different twist as one faction has placed a court injunction on the polls.

Initially the party met two weeks ago to elect its constituency executives but it was marred by a titanic clash between the Regional Chairman, Modestus Ahiable and Moses Azaglo another party kingpin over a party membership card.

Volta Regional NDC Vice Chairman, Kwasi Aboagye who is also aspiring to become Regional Chairman was also dragged into the fracas as the injunction faulted him as one of the reasons for freezing the election.

According to the injunction the aspiring Chairman is not the appropriate person to have chosen the venue for the conference as he has allegedly done contrary to party rules and regulations.

It will be recalled that NDC delegates recently gathered at Dzodze to elect new party executives only for the process to be called off.

This was after Mr. Ahiable allegedly stormed the venue claiming Mr. Azaglo; the Constituency Chairman for nine years should be disqualified because his party card was not genuine.

After the pronouncement, delegates were reported to have gone berserk amidst shouting “no Azaglo, no vote” necessitating a marathon emergency meeting between Mr. Ahiable and some National executives who had come to witness the elections.

They finally decided that for the sake of peace, the elections should be postponed till November 17. Delegates could however not meet for this due to the court injunction.

Mr. Azaglo told DAILY GUIDE immediately the first election was called off that he has held constituency party card number 001 since his days as Constituency Chairman and that he issued constituency party card number 002 to the Volta Regional NDC Chairman in 1996.

He therefore wondered why the chairman would be saying today that he  holds a fake card.

He believes the relationship between him and the Chairman turned sour after he (Ahiable) lost the primaries to James Klutse Avedzi in 2004 since he considers him (Azaglo) responsible for his defeat.

According to him, it was because of hatred for him that Mr. Ahiable masterminded his two-time rejection at the Assembly when President Mills appointed him as the District Chief Executive for Ketu North.

Mr. Ahibale has however denied allegations he has a problem with Mr. Azaglo. He told this paper earlier that prior to the conference, the current Constituency Chairman and his secretary had drawn his attention to some anomalies with the party cards of two of the contestants, one of which was Mr. Azaglo’s.

He noted when they investigated the matter, they realised there was some criminality involved.

Mr. Ahiable alleged the party card Mr. Azaglo holds is different from the one he used when he was the Constituency Chairman. A closer check on Mr. Azaglo’s card shows that new leaflets were added to his old party card, Mr. Ahiable said.

Observers are keenly watching the outcome of the impasse between the two NDC gurus.
