Ghana Marks AU Day

African Union (AU)The Ministry of Information has noted that this year’s Africa Union Day will be celebrated under the theme “Towards a United, Peaceful and Prosperous Africa,” over a one-week period from Friday, May 22 to Thursday, May 28, 2009.

A press release signed by the acting Chief Director of the Ministry, D.A.Y. Sampong, said that the celebration comes at a time when the leadership of the continent is faced with issues such as a Union Government and the challenges of peace and democratic consolidation.

According to Mr. Sampong, the theme for the ECOWAS celebration is “Eliminating obstacles for free movement, while fighting cross border crime,” and aims at addressing the obstacles to free movement of goods and persons, as well as the consolidation of cross-border security.

As part of the celebration, the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) will organise a round table decision on the topic of moving closer to a United State of Africa.

A sensitization programme will also be held from June 2nd to 5th, 2009 by the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice Sensitisation Mission to keep Ghanaians abreast of the functions of the court and how they can make use of it.
