Jurgen Klinsmann has declared himself happy with Bayern Munich’s performance in their 1-1 home draw against Barcelona, despite the fact they crashed out of the Champions League.
The German side were always facing an uphill struggle after losing 4-0 at the Camp Nou last week; and even though they scored first, they could not break the Spanish defence down again.
Indeed, Barcelona hit back to draw the game on the night, but even so, Klinsmann was more impressed with his team.
“We had good feelings before the match, we were thinking that we could dream of qualifying. Then, after going 1-0 we had some hope, but the tie has been finished. At least we have shown ourselves against opponents of another level,” AS reports him as saying.
“We came here with the idea of recovery. If we had scored another goal then the miracle might have been possible but in general I am happy with my team.”
The coach also spoke about a penalty decision which he felt could have gone their way, saying it “could have put us in the tie”, and about songs from the fans that were aimed against him.
“It is not pleasant, but it is normal that after the 5-1 against Wolfsburg, the fans are relieved,” he mused.
Finally, Klinsmann admitted that despite defeat, he will be taking some positives from the competition this year.
“I have learned what the top level is, the awareness of the first ball, the compactness of the teams…All their players are at the same level, that takes many years to create and we still have work in front of us,” he concluded.
