SOME RESIDENTS of Kumasi have condemned the seizure of the personal car of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2008 elections.
On Monday, a four-man security team directed from the Osu Castle shamefully seized the private car of the seasoned politician who lost the race to the presidency by a slim margin.
The car, a black Toyota Land Cruiser V8 series with registration number GE 4416 Z, was apprehended in the central business district of Accra around 3:30 pm while the driver, Joseph Addo, was on a shopping errand to the Opera Square.
Residents who spoke to DAILY GUIDE described the act as not only disgraceful but uncultured, and that it should be condemned by all and sundry.
They indicated that the unbelievable act, which is characteristic of coup d’états, could heighten tension in the country if not checked immediately.
The disillusioned residents therefore urged President Mills to demonstrate that he really is in firm control of the running of the state by nipping the outlandish practice in the bud sooner than later.
Callers who commented on what has suddenly become a current issue for discussion on Kumasi radio stations also vehemently condemned the development.
Stephen Amoah, a leading member of the NPP, in an interview with this paper, described the development as awkward and a disgrace to the country in the eyes of the international world.
He however noted that he was not surprised that the scenario is happening in the era of the NDC because intimidation and harassment are the hallmarks of the ruling party.
Claiming that NDC operatives have been misconducting themselves, he pointed out that the assertion that the NDC is a violent party has been vindicated.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Spokesperson, Mahama Ayariga, has rendered an unqualified apology to Nana Addo for the embarrassing treatment on Kessben Fm in Kumasi
“The government deeply regrets the unlawful seizure of Nana Addo’s car and accordingly apologizes for the misfortune,†he said.
Talking about the ugly development, Ayariga promised that this condemnable spectacle would never be repeated.
Speaking on the same network, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, Director at the Danquah Institute, who is with Nana Addo in London currently, disclosed that the legal luminary had wholeheartedly accepted the apology.
He however hinted that the NPP 2008 flagbearer would officially write to President Mills asking him to ensure that the seizure of people’s private cars is stopped for the sake of the country’s peace.
