Bawumia’s car searched for guns

Dr Mahamudu BawumiaA vehicle belonging to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, New Patriotic Party running-mate in the 2008 elections was on Friday morning seized at the Tamale Airport on suspicion that it contained weapons.

The banker is said to have been detained at the airport for an hour while his vehicle was driven away for a thorough search by a team of military men at the airport.

Sources close to the Tamale Airport security indicated that Dr Bawumia’s vehicle was searched upon instructions from the BNI headquarters in Accra.

Anthony Kaba, an aide to the former Bank of Ghana deputy governor told reporters Dr Bawumia was in the northern regional city for a private visit.

He was shortly after arrival picked up by his driver and his bodyguard who had earlier arrived at the airport by road from Accra.
According to Mr Kabul, minutes after picking Dr Bawumia, military men at the airport confronted him on suspicion that he had some weapons on his vehicle.

“He was asked to get out of the car, he got out of the car and it was taken to the military office at the airport,” he said.

The vehicle is said to have been returned to Dr Bawumia after the search.
