Otumfuo Marks 10th Anniversary

Otumfuo Osei Tutu IITHE ASHANTEHENE, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II would be celebrating 10 years of his ascension of the Golden Stool as the King of the Asante Kingdom.

The Planning Committee, in a press statement on Wednesday, announced activities lined up to mark the occasion. According to the statement the celebration would officially be launched at the Inner Gardens of the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday, February 21, 2009.

The committee, chaired by the Juabenhene, Nana Otuo Siriboe II, informs the general public that the programme of event, which would start in February with a remembrance service for the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, would be climaxed by the Akwasidaekese on April 26 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

This year, Otumfuo will honour some of Africa’s past leaders who hosted him over the 10-year period and also welcome to Ghana some of the eminent kings and traditional rulers from various parts of the continent.

Among activities lined up are a soccer gala involving four premiere league clubs, photo exhibition, a film on the achievements of Otumfuo, a choral music festival, Nnwomkro music competition, as well as a quiz, essay and debate competition among schools in the Ashanti Region.

There will also be an awards dinner and dance night and a choral music festival. A colourful souvenir book on Otumfuo’s 10 years reign as Asantehene will also be launched at a special ceremony.

His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills will be the special guest of honour at the celebrations.
