Ghana’s development partners on Monday announced a 1.7 billion dollar
\nsupport for the year 2008 to accelerate implementation of programmes
\nunder the country’s Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy II.<\/p>\n
The
\ndeclaration came at the end of the 15th Ghana Consultative Group
\nMeeting of government officials, development experts, partners and
\ncivil society organizations in Accra.<\/p>\n
Ghana has in recent years witnessed a consistent increase in donor funding, reaching a level of 1.2 billion dollars last year.<\/p>\n
Mr
\nFiliberto Ceriani Sebregondi, Head of EU Delegation in Ghana, said the
\nincreased support was the joint effort of donors to align their
\ncontributions to the development aspirations of Ghana.<\/p>\n
“We
\nhave constantly engaged in the last few years in a progressive
\nalignment of aid to the country’s priority of human resource
\ndevelopment, private sector competitiveness and good governance,” he
\ntold a press conference shortly after the meeting.<\/p>\n
He was confident that the donors would deliver on their commitments in view of the performance in the last two years.<\/p>\n
Development partners had delivered about 95 per cent of their commitments in the last few years.<\/p>\n
Mr
\nIshac Diwan, World Bank Country Director, said attention was paid at
\nthe meeting to the oil and food price shocks and how it could impact on
\nthe country’s growth prospects.<\/p>\n
He said the country had shown enough economic stability, which had enabled it to withstand the shocks.<\/p>\n
Mr
\nKwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, said
\npressures from domestic power supply shock, higher crude oil and food
\nprices posed a serious development challenge to the economy.<\/p>\n
He
\nsaid the meeting stressed the need for a move towards co-ordinating aid
\neffectively through alignment between donor partners’ activity and that
\nof government.<\/p>\n
\nMr Joseph Henry Mensah, Chairman of
\nthe Development Planning Commission, stressed the need to generate
\nenough domestic resources and consider official development assistance
\nas a supplement. <\/p>\n
The meeting discussed the results,
\nachievements and challenges of Ghana’s development and poverty
\nreduction efforts on the theme: Ghana’s Aid Policy-A Joint Approach to
\nAccelerated Development.”<\/p>\n
Highlights of the meeting
\nincluded a long-term national development plan being prepared by the
\nNational Development Planning Commission and the Annual Progress Report
\non Ghana’s Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy II. <\/p>\n
There
\nwas also discussions initiated by the development partners on division
\nof labour to help address donor fragmentation, accountability and
\ntransparency and also minimise transaction costs and achieve greater
\ncomparative advantage.<\/p>\n
