\nDenmark is the happiest country in the world, according to the
\nlatest World Values Survey published by the United States National
\nScience Foundation.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n
\nThe annual study surveyed people in 97 countries to discover who is happiest.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe survey asked people two simple questions about their happiness and their level of satisfaction with life.\n<\/p>\n
\nPuerto Rico and Colombia completed the top three happiest nations.
\nZimbabwe was found to be the least happy, with Russia and Iraq also in
\nthe bottom 10.

\nThe study was directed by University of Michigan professor
\nRonald Inglehart. He says that unlike other studies, which have focused
\non economic factors, his research has found that financial prosperity
\nis not the only reason for happiness.\n<\/p>\n
\n"Our research indicates prosperity is linked with happiness. It
\ndoes contribute," he says, "but it is not the most important factor.\n<\/p>\n
\n"Personal freedom is even more important, and it’s freedom in
\nall kinds of ways. Political freedom, like with democracy and freedom
\nof choice."\n<\/p>\n
\nA happier world<\/b>\n<\/p>\n
\nThe world is becoming a happier place overall, according to the survey, which has been conducted since 1981.\n<\/p>\n
\nDr Inglehart says that gender equality is also an indicator of
\nhappiness, as is rising social tolerance. He says that both of these
\nthings have risen dramatically in recent years.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe world’s wealthiest nation, the United States, was found to
\nbe the world’s 16th happiest country, behind Switzerland, Canada and
\nSweden.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe study also found that the countries at the bottom of the
\nlist all struggle with widespread poverty or authoritarian governments.\n<\/p>\n
\nZimbabwe, which is gripped by hyperinflation, and has recently
\nseen a controversial presidential election marred by violence, was
\nfound to be the least happy nation amongst the countries covered by the
\nsurvey.\n<\/p>\n
