A Swedish family discovered a big reason why their cat stopped going into the kitchen — a 39.5 cm rat was hanging around there.
The family told the English-language newspaper The Local they initially thought the cat was just afraid of a small mouse.
“But after a while we figured it couldn’t be because it was making too much noise,” Signe Bengtsson said.
Bengtsson soon saw the rodent making all the noise enjoying a smorgasbord in the trash.
Her husband doubted the size of the rat at first, until it started sitting under the kitchen table.
The family called pest control, which came in with three large traps. The rat was caught by its neck, but managed an escape before dying.
“The kids were afraid it would come back to life as some sort of zombie rat. They didn’t want to touch it,” Erik Korsas said.
The rat was 39.5 cm (15.5 inches), not counting the tail.
