Why I Am Against Creation Of Additional States In Nigeria-Tinubu
Less than a week after delegates to the ongoing National Conference in Abuja recommended that 18 states should be added to the current 36 states in Nigeria, a former Head of Service in Lagos State, Mr. Rafiu Tinubu, has faulted the recommendation.
Tinubu, who currently serves in the Federal Civil Service Commission, while speaking during the celebration of his 70th birthday and the public presentation of his book entitled, ‘Supplication’ in Lagos, stated that Nigeria needed no additional states.
He said creating more states would result to waste of resources, adding that Nigeria had more challenges to combat other than state creation.
“There should be no more state creation. I don’t buy the idea. Creating more states will mean wastage of funds to me. Creating more states means we will be using the fund that is supposed to be used for the development of the country to pay salaries of governors, special assistants, special advisers, commissioners among others.

“It is a waste of money. We should cover our face for not being on the same development level with other nations,” the ex-HOS in Lagos State stated.
It would be recalled that veteran journalist and publisher of Ovationa Internation magazine, Dele Momodu had also condemned the proposal to create additional states in Nigeria.

According to a tweet Momodu posted on his official twitter handle, creating more states would only create more avenues for unscrupulous politicians to siphon money out of the country’s coffers.
He urged the delegates proposing the creation of new states to rather start to think of how to merge some of the existing 36 states.
