Volta Chiefs Warn Trouble Makers
The members of the Volta Region House of Chiefs have called on the police to deal ruthlessly with people who parade themselves as chiefs and foment trouble in the region. 3
According to the chiefs, they would not tolerate such negative behaviours since it has the potential to retard development and cast a slur on the chieftaincy institution.
The House noted that the land dispute between Nkonya and Alavanyo traditional areas had not been addressed and would not allow any group of people or individuals to foment trouble in the Aflao traditional in the name of chieftaincy.
According to the house, they only recognize Torgbui Amenya Fiti V as Paramount Chief of Aflao. Speaking at an emergency meeting of the House in Ho yesterday, the president, Togbe Afede XIV announced that the Aflao Paramount Chief, Togbe Amenya Fiti had reported to the House about a letter he received from Torgbui Sri III, the Awomefia of Anlo, which he considered as provocative and a threat to peace in Aflao traditional area.
The letter of the Awomefia informed him (Torgbui Fiti) about the Awomefia’s intention to visit Aflao, which the said letter referred to as part of Anlo Kingdom, a statement Torgbui Fiti did not take kindly to because Aflao had never been part of Anlo.
According to Togbe Afede, the House was surprised that a rival chief had been installed and outdoored at Anloga. But when they contacted the Awomefia based on the complaint from Togbe Afeti, he denied any knowledge and distanced himself from it.
Togbe Afede emphasized that Torgbui Amenya Fiti has been a rotating member of the House over the years, without protest from any group of people.
The president of the House continued that, Torgbui Amenya Fiti recently took the oath of office, and was sworn in as a permanent member of the House, adding that with time energy and resources being invested with the support of government to find solution to the Nkonya-Alavanyo land dispute, another one must not be allowed to fester.
The House, Togbe Afede said could not afford any chieftaincy dispute this time in the southern half of the region and assured that the VRHC would continue to respect the membership of Torgbui Amenya Fiti until otherwise directed by a court of competent jurisdiction.
‘Any new claimants to the Aflao paramount stool are accordingly advised to proceed to court to seek legal recognition to their claims.’ The Volta Regional Minister, Joseph Nii Laryea Afortey Agbo said the security was on top of the issue and were monitoring development in the Aflao area.
The emotionally charged Minister said: ‘we have laws that govern us, we are not in the animal kingdom. When it comes to issues of security, I can assure you that I can display very well and anybody who would like to disturb the peace, I would enjoy engaging that person or group of persons.
I am going to do everything possible to ensure that there is peace at Aflao because as Chairman of the Security Council, we have not received any letter stating that Torgbui Fiti is no more the paramount chief’.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr. Fred Agyepong Asare said the police were ever ready to protect life and property in the region and assured the chiefs of making available to them Divisional Commanders cell phone numbers ‘so that you will make them not to sleep, please don’t let them sleep for they are there for you’.
