Volta chiefs condemn installation of new ‘Paramount Chief’ for Aflao
The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has condemned the installation of a new paramount chief for the Aflao Traditional Area, saying Torgbui Amenya Fiti V remains the unchallenged paramount chief of the area.
The house, as part of its deliberations, called for legal punitive measures for persons who decided to foment needless chieftaincy troubles to deter other actors in the future.
The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, making the pronouncement at an emergency meeting of the house Tuesday, said that Torgbui Fiti V had been a rotatory member of the house for several years during which they had not received any protest about this membership.
‘Torgbui Amenya Fiti V has been known to us over the years as the Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Area, and we have referred to him as such without any protest from any quarters’, he stressed.
According to Togbe Afede XIV, they had worked hard to ensure the passage of legislation which expanded the permanent membership of the VRHC to 59 traditional areas including Aflao following which Torgbui Fiti V recently took the oath of office and was sworn in as a permanent member of the house.
NO MORE ROOM FOR DISPUTES
‘Given all the time, energy and resources we are investing, with the support of government, to find solution to the Alavanyo/Nkonya land dispute, the Anlo chieftaincy dispute, and the other land and chieftaincy disputes that are retarding progress in our region, we cannot afford any provocative acts, and much less from the south, which have the potential to result in violence and loss of life and property’, he maintained.
The VRHC, he said, would continue to respect the membership of Torgbui Amenya Fiti V, and accord him all the respect, rights and privileges until otherwise directed by a court of competent jurisdiction.
‘Any new claimants to the Aflao paramount stool are accordingly advised to proceed to court to seek legal recognition to their claims’, he advised.
THE ANLO CONNECTION
Torgbui Afede XIV recounted that at the last emergency meeting of the house called to discuss the Alavanyo/Nkonya conflict, Torgbui Amenya Fiti V reported to the house about a letter he had received from Torgbui Sri III, the Awoamefia of Anlo communicating the intention of the Torgbui Sri III to visit Aflao, referring to Aflao in the said letter as part of the Anlo Kingdom.
He said, Torgbui Fiti V considered the said description of Aflao as part of the Anlo Kingdom ‘provocative and a threat to peace in Aflao’.
‘Then on September 13, Torgbui Amenya Fiti V called me and requested an urgent meeting to discuss a troubling development in the Aflao Traditional Area. Torgbui Fiti V came to Ho early the following morning and reported to me that the Anlos had confined someone in Anloga for installation as the ‘Chief of Aflao”, he said.

Subsequently, Togbe Afede XIV said he received a call from the Torgbui Sri III lamenting about the development and that he had no prior knowledge of it and did not support it.
He also referred to a recent press conference by the newly installed chief and his supporters attempting to legitimize the installation through the media. He added however that it was noteworthy to see some publications quoted the Awoamefia, Torgbui Sri III as having distanced himself from the installation.
‘THIS IS CHILD PLAY’
But the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo in his address to the VRHC said sometimes he got worried as to why some prominent persons from the region could be masterminding disputes in the region and on the other hand believe that the Aflao case looked more like ‘a child’s play’, because no prominent person from the region could be behind the situation in Aflao.
He said the legal regime of the country had developed beyond what was currently happening and that people who felt they had a strong case in chieftaincy matters, had to resort to the law courts.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, ACP Kofi Asare gave the assurance that the police under his administration were very prepared to ensure the security of every inhabitant in the region.
‘I give the assurance in the hope that I have the men and the resources to do that’, he said, adding that he was going to furnish all the chiefs in the house with the contact details of all the respective police officers in their various traditional areas.
‘Call them at all times and don’t let them sleep. We are prepared to support every legitimate authority’, he reinforced.
