‘Vocational skills can enhance national growth’

Kaduna State Commissioner for Commerce and Industries Alhaji Gambo Lawal has said that vocational skills contribute to governments’ efforts towards national growth and development.

He said this during an interactive session among donors, trainers and trainees of vocational training programme of Zaria Education Development Association (ZEDA).
The commissioner, who was represented by Alhaji Abdulfatah Yusuf, Director, Kaduna Community Resource Centre, observed that no nation can succeed without vocational skills.
“Vocational skills complement government efforts geared towards building a virile nation. Government alone cannot provide jobs for all Nigerians hence the need for collective efforts. ZEDA should intensify efforts at training more youths on different vocations to make them self-employed,” Lawal said.
In his speech, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, ZEDA, Alhaji Abdullahi Nuhu Bamalli, said that emphases should be given to youths that have what he called ‘trade wisdom’ to enable them actualise their talent.
Presenting a paper on “Vocational Training Programme of ZEDA”, the Chairman, Educational and Vocational Training Committee, Dr Madinatu Shehu, said the scheme has succeeded in addressing challenges of hunger, poverty and idleness among youths.
She advocated for establishment of vocational training centres at all Colleges of Education and polytechnics to pave way for training of more students.
