Vivo Energy Ghana Set For ‘My Road Safety, My Life’ Campaign


Vivo Energy Ghana, the company that distributes and markets Shell-branded fuels and lubricants as part of its Community Investment Initiatives, has launched a school road safety empowerment programme in partnership with the National Road Safety Commission (NSRC) and the Ghana Education Service.

The programme dubbed ‘My Road Safety, My Life’, has the broad objective of educating school children for a conscious, civilized and safe behaviour on the roadas pedestrians, passengers and cyclist. ‘My Road Safety’ is a pedagogic interactive programme comprising of series of classroom work, outdoor road safety activities, simulation exercises, quiz competitions among other activities.

The first phase of the programme is being implemented in ten basic schools in the Greater Accra Region located on high risk roads. Participating schools are SDA Basic School, Bishop Mixed, Bishop Girls, Accra Sempe Primary, Boundary Road, Kwashieman ‘1’ Basic School, Kwashieman ‘2’ Primary School,Mamprobi Sempe 5 JHS/North 4 Primary School, Salvation Army B Basic and All Saints Anglican Basic

The Minster for Transport, Honourable Dzifa Attivor who launched the programme, said the government takes a serious view of any effort that promotes the welfare of the people and remains committed to supporting the efforts of the NRSC and its stakeholders who, through such collaborations also discharge their corporate social responsibilities. ‘It is for this reason that we shall continue to support in any way possible, any measure that has the potential to contribute to the reduction and prevention of road traffic crashes in the Country’, says Hon. The Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Ing. May Obiri Yeboah commended Vivo Energy Ghana for providing the funding for the project and believed the partnership with the Commission will reinforce safety consciousness in children.

The Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, Mr. Fred Osoro said the company remains committed to the programme, and promise to work with relevant stakeholders towards its successful implementation. He said the company has the plan of replicating it in schools within the ten regions of the country and urged the teachers to intensify road safety education in the various schools.

Toolkits comprising of road safety text books, posters, games, safety vests, school bags among others were distributed to pupils of participating schools to facilitate effective classroom and outdoor lessons on road safety.

Prior to the launch, a trainer of trainer’s workshop on road safety was held for selected teachers from the participating schools to equip them with the requisite skills and resources to enable them educate pupils in their various schools on how to ensure safety on the road and to serve as agents of change for the peers and siblings.

The company employs around 2,000 people and operates 1,430 retail stations under the Shell brand and has access to approximately 900,000 cubic meters of fuel storage capacity. Shell and Vivo Lubricants has blending capacity of around 150,000 metric tons at plants in seven countries (Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal) producing Shell branded lubricants.
