University of Ghana student declares interest in NDC post
A student of the University of Ghana Business School, Mr Bright Somiah, has declared his intention to contest the position of youth organiser of the National Democratic Congress in the Upper Denkyira West Constituency in the Central Region. He said he was entering the race to help change the fortunes of the party positively towards the 2016 elections.
Speaking with the Daily Graphic in Kumasi, Mr Somiah said his association with the party over the years had positioned him properly to take up the position.
As a youth activist, he said, he had worked with other youth members to whip up the enthusiasm of the youth in the constituency, and expressed the hope that when the time came, delegates would vote massively for him.
He stated that the failure of the NDC to win the constituency seat in previous elections was due to a number of factors, including laxity on the part of some party leaders in the area.
Mr Somiah said the party had the opportunity to win the 2016 elections in the constituency, but that would call for hard work.
He rejected claims by the opposition that the economy was in tatters, questioning why the opposition failed to use various economic indicators that were normally used by experts to ascertain the true state of the economy.
Mr Somiah also suggested that the party, at its national delegates’ conference, should take a second look at the position of its constitution that allowed people to contest the president at congress while he or she was in the first term of office.
That, he noted, could help eliminate divisions in the party and give the president the freedom to operate.
He commended the President for his interest in the youth, and expressed the hope that this would trickle down to all areas of the party’s operations.
