UN Focusing On Post 2015 Development Agenda
The United Nations Day celebration is focusing on the post 2015 development Agenda including the role of women, youth and civil society, the contributions of Human Rights and the rule of law, south- south cooperation and ICT for development.
Ms. Ruby Sandhu Rojon Country Representative and Resident coordinator for UNHCR said this at a press briefing in Accra dubbed MDGs to post 2015. Accelerated Ghana’s sustainable development strides.
She said as the nation prepares to mark this day come Thursday, the theme was chosen as they strive forward in building on Ghana’s successful participation in developing the global post development framework.
She said the UN’s delivering to the Ghana is one initiative which serves to strengthen the relevance, effectiveness and efficiency of the UN operational activities for the development in each in each country.
Ms. Hanna Tetteh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration stated that the UN is the most viable forum that they have in the world today for the pursuit of issues which the nature must be addressed on a global scale in order to make real progress on the matter.
This she said would involve the issue of global peace and security, the fight against disease and contagion, as well as advancing the global economic development agenda among other things.
She said there is the need to considering the challenges that confront global and national sustainable development effort, it is appropriate that the theme for this year’s anniversary is focusing on sustainable development agenda.
This said stated will help particular significant for Ghana to work towards building a strong and resilient economy that meet our development aspirations without compromising the needs of future generations.
“Since Ghana attained independence in 1957, successive regimes tasked with managing the affairs of government have purse policies, programs and projects to accelerate the standard the growth of the Ghanaian economy and thereby raise the living standard of the people .these policies, program and projects are often expressed in the form of the national development policy frameworks or pans around which national and development partners effort coordinated,” she said.
She lamented on Governments strategic direction towards achieving sustainable development has been to lay the foundation for the structural transformation of the economy by investing in infrastructure, investing and investing in the economy to develop our country.
“We have done this through the modernization of agriculture and pursing initiative that will lead to improves in productivity by increasing yield and encouraging the optimum use of our agricultural resources. “she stated.
Mrs. Hannah Serwah Tetteh indicated that Ghanaian economy has since the beginning of this year witnessed a number of short term challenges. The situation would not dampen our resolve in executing our agenda to build a better Ghana Agenda
“we have had to take some prudent and timely decision to ensure that we have achieve our fiscal objectives for the year and prudently manage our economy in away that will promote and not stifle our future opportunity for growth and development”.
As 2015 deadline for the millennium development goals is drawing closer, and we review the progress that we as a country and the world as a whole have made, as well as the areas where we have not met our goals and the MDG targets it behaves all stakeholders to intensify the consultative process that set a new agenda to succeed the current one.
The government of Ghana through the ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional integration at various international and domestic forum has taken advantage of these opportunities to make our position known, even as we work within the African union to present a common set of African priorities for the post 2015 development agenda.
