Uganda/Egypt: Egypt Three Uganda Cranes Zero
When Uganda Cranes coach Micho Sredejovic lost his first match in charge of team 3-0 to Libya in Tripoli last June, the result didn’t matter much but it was the corrections to make that were the issue.
Indeed, he went onto win two successive World Cup qualifiers against Angola and Liberia in almost the same week. It is in the same spirit that the Serb approached the Uganda Cranes’ friendly against former African champions Egypt at El Gouna Stadium today.
Perhaps Micho expected a similar outcome against Egypt when he insisted that playing matches against superior teams served only as eye openers.
“It was important that we had this friendly because it has helped me identify mistakes we made. Five players showed their potential. (Substitute Richard) Kasaga actually impressed me. We created chances to score but (Emma) Okwi missed,” Micho said after the match.
Although the Pharaohs also beat the Cranes 3-0, Micho ensured that all his players in the squad and especially the junior ones save for defender Savio Kabugo got a feel of the hostile North African environment.
Ahmed Hassan Koka opened the scoring for Egypt in the 22 second minute before Mohamed Salah doubled the tally 12 minutes after the break then Ibrahim Salah sealed Egypt’s victory with seven minutes to go.
The Cranes are expected back in Kampala tomorrow.
