Kumasi, March 24, GNA – Hundreds of teacher-trainees on Monday hit the streets in Kumasi to protest against the scrapping of allowances paid to them and to demand its immediate restoration.

They vowed to resist any attempt by the Finance and Economic Planning Ministry to carry through the planned decision to stop the allowance payment in June this year.

The demonstrators chanted slogans and held placards with messages like Oh Mahama why teachers, Teachers abre, who say money no dey, money dey, Pay us, pay us to work well.

The event passed off peacefully and saw the aggrieved trainees present a petition to the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Yaw Adusei, at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).

Mr John Asanzero Abotisum, President of the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Chapter of the Teacher-Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) said about 40 per cent of the level 100 students had not been able to return to school since the colleges re-opened because of financial difficulties.

Many of those who reported had also been sent home over their inability to pay fees.

We are as a matter of urgency calling on the government to intervene immediately by restoring the allowance so that we will be able to pay our feeding fee and other bills, he said.

Mr Abotisum said it must not be lost on anyone that quality education was the best bet to change the economic fortunes of the country and transform the lives of the people.

The allowance was not only to motivate and attract quality students to train as teachers but to ease the financial burden and help those from poor families to access tertiary education.

Mr Adusei praised them for the peaceful protest march and said the petition would be sent to the appropriate authorities.
