Tradition prevails: No Shatta Wale for Black Stars farewell match
The send-off match for the national soccer team against their local counterparts on Friday will go ahead without entertainment as earlier advertised due to the decision by organisers to respect the ban on noise making and drumming with the Ga Traditional Area.
The Black Stars preparing for the FIFA World Cup will for the first time get spiritual backing off their countrymen when they take on 27 of the best players from the local league codenamed ‘Dream Team’ at the Accra Sports Stadium in a ceremonial farewell match.
Organisers had wanted top musicians including artiste of the year, Shatta Wale and award winning Castro to entertain football fans at the game but that plan has now been shelved due to the annual ban on drumming and noise making before the annual Homowo festival of the Ga people.
‘We made it clear during the launch of this match that we would spice up the game with massive entertainment involving Shatta Wale and many other artistes,” Jeffery Asare of Primeval Consult told Tuesday’s press conference.
“Unfortunately we are operating within the confines of traditional authority and traditional convention so in view of the ban on drumming and noise making we have to respect because we live and do everything on the traditional land so we cancel the entertainment part of the event,’ Mr. Asare added.
The match nevertheless goes ahead as scheduled with tickets already out and selling in town. VVIP tickets are selling for GH¢30, VIP for GH¢20, Lower VIP is GH¢15, Osu Stand is GH¢10 and popularstand GH¢5.
Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah undelined the significance of the welfare match to the Black Stars ahead of the World Cup.
‘It’s very important, we need to showcase our players to Ghanaians. This is the time for Ghanaians to offer their prayers and get behind the team and we’ll make sure all the players invited will play in the match,’ Coach Appiah said.
‘It’s something we’ve not done before but we deem it fit to get the blessings of the people of Ghana and get the support of the people as we embark on the journey to Brazil,’ added GFA Spokesperson Ibrahim Sannie Daara.
