Mark Buehrle, Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind were all influential as the American League East-leading Blue Jays made it eight wins in succession.

Buehrle allowed four runs and eight hits, while Encarnacion and Lind hit back-to-back home runs for the Blue Jays, who improved their record to 31-22 this season having gone unbeaten since May 18.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox registered back-to-back victories against the Atlanta Braves, winning 6-3.

Fresh from ending a 10-game slide, the Red Sox were at it again as a four-run seventh inning lifted them to victory on the road.

The Houston Astros won their fourth consecutive game courtesy of a 3-0 shutout of the Kansas City Royals.

At Chase Field, the San Diego Padres surrendered a two-run lead but composed themselves to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3, and Lance Lynn produced a five-hit shutout as the St Louis Cardinals eased past the New York Yankees 6-0 at Busch Stadium.

Elsewhere, a three-run first inning set the Milwaukee Brewers on their way to a 7-6 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles.

Wilin Rosario hit a go-ahead three-run homer as the Colorado Rockies overcame the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2.

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3, while the Chicago Cubs were 4-0 losers at the hands of the National League West-leading San Francisco Giants.

The Detroit Tigers withstood a stern challenge from the Oakland Athletics to prevail 6-5.

Eduardo Nunez tied the game with a two-out single before hitting the winning run as the Minnesota Twins rallied to beat the Texas Rangers 4-3.

The New York Mets were 4-2 winners against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Los Angeles Angels edged the Seattle Mariners 6-4 and the Chicago White Sox accounted for the Cleveland Indians 2-1.

Meanwhile, the match between the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals was postponed due to inclement weather.
