The Blue Jays capped a successful series at the famed venue with a 7-2 victory that came on the back of yet another strong performance from starting pitcher Mark Buehrle.

Buehrle pitched seven innings, striking out five while allowing seven hits.

The Blue Jays’ hot hitting continued at the top of the first inning, when Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista both crunched homers.

A five-run second inning followed as the Canadian outfit gained their match-winning lead, as Bautista, Jose Reyes (two), Edwin Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie all batted in runs.

Results went the Blue Jays’ way on Thursday, as rivals the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles also lost.

The Yankees remain a game behind the Blue Jays after falling 3-2 to the Chicago White Sox, while the Orioles were pipped 8-7 by the Cleveland Indians after 13 innings.

The Tampa Bay Rays, six games behind the Blue Jays, enjoyed a 5-2 win over the Oakland Athletics.

AL Central leaders the Detroit Tigers fell to their fourth straight loss, going down to the Texas Rangers 9-2.

The Seattle Mariners were too good for the Houston Astros 3-1.

In the National League, East division leaders the Atlanta Braves preserved a two-game lead courtesy of their 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hot on the Braves’ heels are the Miami Marlins, who won 4-3 over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Washington Nationals lost two in a row, after the Pittsburgh Pirates trumped them 3-1, while the New York Mets were 5-3 winners over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The St Louis Cardinals’ third win in succession – a 4-2 result over the Arizona Diamondbacks – took them to within 1.5 games of the NL Central-leading Brewers.

The top of the table clash in the NL West division between the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies was suspended due to rain, with the sides locked at 2-2 at the bottom of the sixth inning.

The remainder of the match will take place in September.

The lowly Chicago Cubs had something to smile about, as they downed the San Diego Padres 5-1.
