Throwing to history: Ampomah breaks national javelin record at US NAIA


Ghana and Wiley College scholar, John Ampomah has set a new national javelin record after throwing 74.42m on his way to winning the javelin championship at the 2014 US NAIA National Championships.

Ampomah smashed the previous mark of 74.35m which he set in his first competition this season at the Jim Mize Invitational on Saturday 22nd March, in the process.

He was followed in second place by Andy White of British Columbia with 72.35m while Victor Lindon took third place with 66.29m.

Ampomah dominated proceedings from the start, throwing a massive 72.44m and subsequently threw 71.36m, 71.49m, 71.51m, before setting new record, 74.42m with his last throw.

It will be recalled that the reigning national javelin record holder was ranked 2nd in Africa after throwing 74.35m in his first competition this season at the Jim Mize Invitational on Saturday 22nd March.

John Ampomah broke onto the scene in 2012, obliterating the national record with a throw of 69.00m in March 2012 in Tamale, before improving the record two more times at the African Championship, where he won silver, and at the 2012 rlg Grand Prix where he threw 73.69m.

Ampomah, a student-athlete at Wiley College in the USA, made a bright start to his career, after winning the National JUCO Championships in the USA in May 2013.
