The Police have arrested three out of the five suspects accused of raping a 16-year-old girl in an uncompleted building in the Orile Iganmu area of Lagos State.
The police said the men abducted the victim, took her to her into the building around 2am by the suspects afterwards took turns to rape her.
The suspects who were arrested after a police raid have been identified as Shittu Taiwo (23), Riliwan Alao (32), and Sunday Akinyele (27) while the other suspects took to their heels.
They were arraigned on Tuesday before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on two counts of rape.
The charge reads, “That you, Shittu Taiwo, Riliwan Alao, Sunday Akinyele and two others at large on June 4, 2014, at about 2am in an uncompleted building along Giwa Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos State in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: rape.
“That you and others at large did have unlawful sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old girl (name withheld).”
The police prosecutor, DSP Etim Nkankuk, said the offence was punishable under sections 409 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial.
Their defence counsel, F.S. Oladele, applied for their bail in liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.A. Demi-Ajayi, admitted them to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till July 23, 2014.
Meanwhile the increase in rate cases these days has become worrisome.
On June 7, it was reported that a 19-year-old girl (names withheld) was gang-raped by her ex-boyfriend, Kingsley and his friends and they recorded it.
On June 1, it was reported that another 19-year-old girl was gang-rape by five men in Bariga area of Lagos state.
Its no wonder the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire called for life imprisonment, without an option of fine, for convicted rapist.
