Tension is gradually raging between drivers of trotro mini-buses who operate at Roman Hill in Kumasi and the decongestion team of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) as the drivers have vowed to resist attempts by the KMA to cause their arrest or take bribes from them.
Some of the drivers, who spoke to this reporter in Kumasi, do not understand why a retired officer identified only as Moro should be removing their car stickers and also extort thousand of cedis from them.
They said another issue that is disturbing their work is the pointed cramps used by the taskforce of the Ghana Youth Entrepreneurial Employment Development Authority (GYEEDA) place on roads to delay them (drivers).
The drivers allege that the harassment been visited on them is at the behest of the Asemhene, Nana Ampofo Kyei Baafour, who also operates a lorry terminal at Dunkirk. According to them authorities at the KMA are unaware of their plight.
Nana Kyei Baafour in an interview told reporters that he has the right to operate a lorry terminal in the city and any group of persons who have any reservation about that can seek redress in the law court.
The drivers’ main concern is that the current stand-off between them and the GYEEDA taskforce is causing hardship to them and it is also causing unnecessary traffic jams at the Roman Hill vicinity, which is one of the Central Business Districts in Kumasi.
The drivers are at a loss as to why City Guards officials have been sidelined and not seen performing their functions, whiles the GYEEDA guards have all of a sudden become the new kids on the block and are abusing their powers.
‘What money is used to pay these GYEEDA guards’? The drivers asked, and pointed out that, these people are being paid illegally from KMA coffers since GYEEDA as an entity is not functional.
They have therefore called on the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon Kojo Bonsu, to intervene to remove the GYEEDA guards off the street and the dreaded Moro from the Central Business Districts before they (drivers) exert their anger.
