Takoradi Poly Closed Down

Rev Prof Daniel Agyapong Nyarko
The Academic Board of Takoradi Polytechnic has resolved that the polytechnic goes on recess effective today based on the dictates of the academic calendar for the 2013/2014 academic year.

The decision was taken by the Academic Board at its fifth emergency meeting held yesterday.

The meeting agreed that all first and second year students were to start the compulsory industrial attachment with immediate effect as stated on the academic calendar.

The meeting also stressed that supervisors would be sent around to ensure that all students were at post.

A press release signed by Sylvia Oppong-Mensah, registrar of Takoradi Polytechnic, asked all the students to proceed on the obligatory recess and vacate the Polytechnic premises with immediate effect.

‘All students would be informed as regards the continuation of the end-of Semester Examinations which have now been suspended indefinitely,’ the release stated.

The academic board of the polytechnic did not attribute the compulsory recess to the strike action by the Polytechnic Teachers Association (POTAG).

However, most of the students believed that the polytechnic had to go on break because of the strike action.

It would be recalled that members of the local chapter of Takoradi Polytechnic declared a strike following government’s inability to pay them their book and research allowance for the 2013/2014 academic year.

The chairman of the T-Poly POTAG local chapter, Michael Appiah, said that the strike action was in line with the national strike declared by their national body outlining a litany of instances where government had shown no commitment to meet their demands.
