LAGOS – Nigerian Police Force officers have made an attempt to disperse the crowd campaigning for the release of over 200 girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents from a school in Borno State.

According to eyewitnesses, the policemen fired gunshots and threw teargas canisters at the protesters. There are no indications on the numbers of injuries yet.

However, the protesters did not falter and have now reached their intended destination at the Onikan Stadium where a Workers Day rally is ongoing.

Nigerian celebrities Waje and Seun Kuti,  a TV producer, actor, journalist and a youth development expert Adebola Williams, designer Ugonna Omeruo, Cameroonian activist Kathleen Ndongmo were spotted among the crowd.

It would be recalled that over two weeks ago, 234 girls were kidnapped from Girls’ Government Secondary School in Chibok town, Borno State. The fate of the girls is still unknown, with thousands of Nigerians and many international organizations demanding their rescue. Nigerian authorities and military representatives have assured they are doing everything possible to save the girls from the hands of Boko Haram abductors.

The protesters have also launched a Twitter awareness campaign, #StolenDreams, to support the #BringBackOurGirls movement.
