Steve Ballmer buys NBA franchise Los Angeles Clippers

Sterling announced the news on Friday in a statement released by her lawyers, Greenburg Glusker, which said that Ballmer had signed a binding deal.

The Sterling Family Trust own the club but owner Donald Sterling was banned for life from having any association with the league after he was recorded making racist comments.

The deal is reported to be worth US$2billion, but would need to be ratified by the NBA.

“I am delighted that we are selling the team to Steve, who will be a terrific owner,” Shelly Sterling said.

“We have worked for 33 years to build the Clippers into a premiere (sic) NBA franchise. I am confident that Steve will take the team to new levels of success.”

Ballmer said it would be an “honour” to own the Clippers and that he would do everything in his power to bring them success.

“I will be honoured to have my name submitted to the NBA Board of Governors for approval as the next owner of the Los Angeles Clippers,” Ballmer said in a statement.

“I love basketball. And I intend to do everything in my power to ensure that the Clippers continue to win ” and win big ” in Los Angeles.

“LA (Los Angeles) is one of the world’s great cities ” a city that embraces inclusiveness, in exactly the same way that the NBA and I embrace inclusiveness.

“I am confident that the Clippers will, in the coming years, become an even bigger part of the community.”

The Clippers reached the play-offs for the third year in a row this season, but were beaten by the Oklahoma City Thunder 4-2 in the Western Conference semi-finals.
