Wawrinka approached the second grand slam of the year as one of the favourites having won the Australian Open in January, but succumbed to a 6-4 5-7 6-2 6-0 first-round loss to Spanish clay-court specialist Garcia-Lopez.

The Swiss’ disappointing display featured a massive 62 unforced errors, and the world number three conceded that he has much to ponder after becoming the first Australian Open champion in 16 years to lose in the first round at Roland Garros.

“Now it’s a different picture for my career. I need to put the puzzle back together, but differently than in the past, because now, after winning a grand slam, a Masters 1000, being number three in the world, everything is different, and I still didn’t find all the pieces,” Wawrinka said.

“He (Garcia-Lopez) is a really good player. I’ve known that for years. Nothing against him, but I think that it was all about me, about the way I was playing, the way I was trying to find solutions. It was just terrible.”

Wawrinka believes the defeat shows that he cannot afford to mentioned in the same breath as regular grand slam contenders Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

“I’ve had ups and downs (since the Australian Open win),” he added.

“That’s why I’m saying I am not at the level of Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, because they have been around for many years, and they win everything.

“I know I’ll have the level. I could defeat them, but it’s different. I need to put the puzzle back together, find solutions, because the pressure is different.”
