Rooney ended almost a year of speculation about his future when he signed a new five and a half year contract which will earn him an eye-watering £85.8million and keep him at Old Trafford for the rest of his top-flight career.

Even though United are enduring their worst season for more than two decades and look set to miss out on Champions League football next season, Rooney is convinced they are on the right track under manager David Moyes, who is likely to name him captain next season.

After moving alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as one of European football’s highest earners, he said: “The future is bright for Manchester United. This is still one of the world’s leading clubs, we have seen this with the signing of Juan Mata in January. People have been saying that we may have trouble attracting the world’s best players but I think the fact Mata came here shows this isn’t true.

“This is a new era for the club, we have a new management team and a great new manager in David Moyes, but there has to be some time for change.

“We have some great players here and, despite our recent form, everyone has stuck together and the team spirit is still good, we will continue to work hard and get Manchester United to the top where it belongs.”

United could miss out on Europe altogether next season but Rooney insisted it will only be a one-season absence because other star players will follow £37.1m club record signing Mata to the club as Moyes embarks on a major squad revamp this summer.

“I know some people thought that [he wouldn’t sign because of no Champions League football] but it’s not a massive concern for me,” he added.

“This is because I know the direction that this club is going in and if we don’t make it this season then we will come back stronger and claim a Champions League spot next season.

“Let’s not forget we still have a chance this year, some of the other teams are playing well but we have a strong squad here and if we have a positive end to the season then who knows what can happen.”

Rooney, who had 16 months left to run on his current deal, is now tied to United until the summer of 2019, just before his 34th birthday. He has also agreed to become a club ambassador when he eventually retires.

But after a decade with United, he insists his best years are still ahead of him.

“I’ve been here since I was 18 and this contract will take me through to my thirties, which is almost my entire professional career,” he said. “I’ve played most of my best football here and am looking forward to hopefully playing even better football in the next few years. I’ve had a lot of special moments and hope there are many more to come.

“I am really excited to be a part of the club’s future and I am convinced that this is the start of another successful chapter in Manchester United’s history.”
