Neither side could find a breakthrough in a game where chances were few and far between, but Remy popped up in the 92nd minute to smash in his 12th league goal of the season.

Gabby Agbonlahor came close to opening the scoring early on for Villa but couldn’t get his shot on target.

Villa continued to push, with Agbonlahor again shooting wide from 25 yards.

Papiss Cisse had the chance to put Newcastle ahead just before half-time but the out-of-sorts striker somehow blazed wide from 10 yards out.

Newcastle started the second half brightly but saw a number of chances go flying past the goal.

Alan Pardew’s men thought they should have been awarded a penalty for a handball off Leandro Bacuna, but their protests were ignored.

Remy then fired a shot against the post before firing the winning goal past Brad Guzan to seal all three points for the Magpies.
