The England international, 29, has one year left on his current deal and could be on the move after falling down the pecking order at Anfield.

Arsenal are on the look-out for a right-back as they prepare to lose French stalwart Bacary Sagna, while City boss Manuel Pellegrini is keen to add another Englishman to his growing squad.

Injuries and the rise of Kop youngster Jon Flanagan have seen Johnson spend most of the season on the sidelines, but his manager insists he remains a key player on Merseyside.

“Glen is a player we want to keep,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

“In terms of his contract, I am sure that is something that will be discussed between now and the end of the season.”

Rodgers also confirmed that Johnson is back with the Liverpool squad to face Swansea on Sunday after recovering from his latest setback.

He said: “Glen will be back in the squad this weekend.

“He was very restricted in his running ability before but he feels 100% better. He looks as good as he has looked for a long time.
