Arsenal
manager Arsene Wenger has left record signing Mesut Ozil out of the squad to
play Sunderland in the league today.

The German, who missed a penalty against Bayern Munich in the Champions League
in midweek, has come under intense criticism recently following a string of
poor performances.

After a spell in which he helped inspire Arsenal to the top of the Premier
League following his £42m transfer from Real Madrid, Ozil has delivered
little in 2014, failing to score in his last nine games and providing only
two assists in that period.

Ozil was so disappointed by his display against Bayern that he
posted a message on Facebook in which he apologised to the fans. “Sorry
guys – it wasn’t planned that way,” he wrote.

Wenger said at his Friday press conference that Ozil was struggling to come to
terms with the missed penalty and defeat. “Is he over it now? Certainly
not, because 48 hours is a short time to get over that, but it is part of
the job as well to deal with disappointment and to show that you can respond
to it.”
