Mesut Özil’s miserable week hit a new low after it emerged Arsenal’s
record signing was quizzed by police over allegations the car he was driving
collided with a photographer.
Midfielder Özil missed a penalty and put in a poor performance against Bayern
Munich in the Champions League and was subsequently rested from the Arsenal
squad for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Sunderland.
It is alleged that £42.5 million signing Özil was involved in an incident
of a car hitting a man the night before the Sunderland game in Highgate,
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were called at approximately
7.18pm on Friday 21 February to reports of an alleged collision between a
vehicle and a member of the public.
“The member of the public, a man in his 30s, sustained minor injuries.
Officers have spoken to the driver of the vehicle.”
The spokesman said inquiries were continuing and no arrests have been made.
Özil is not the first Arsenal player to run into trouble on the road in
recent years. Former left-back Andre Santos was banned for speeding near the
club’s training ground, while Nicklas Bendtner was lucky to escape a bad
Wenger gave his Arsenal players a two-day break following the victory over
Sunderland and it is understood Özil returned to his native Germany.
Arsenal declined to comment, insisting the incident is a private matter for Özil.
