Joel Campbell, on loan from the Gunners, curled in a sweet second goal for the Greek side against a United team who were quite simply awful, giving David Moyes a mountain to climb at Old Trafford on March 19.
United had fallen behind in the 38th minute when Alejandro Dominguez wrong-footed David de Gea by flicking out a foot to deflect in a shot from Giannis Maniatis. And Campbell then rubbed United’s noses in it with his superb 55th-minute effort.
United last overturned a two-goal deficit from a first leg 30 years ago – in 1984 against Barcelona in the Cup Winners’ Cup – and Michael Carrick said: “This loss is hugely disappointing. The players have got to stand up and take responsibility. But we are still in with a chance, we’re not out of it yet.”
