The Awards were aimed at motivating staff and the Regional Sports Development partners to double their contribution towards the realisation of the mission and vision of the Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority under the Directorship of MR KWAME AMPONFI JNR.

Many high profile personalities attended the Awards ceremony. They included Mr David Aboagye, a representative of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo; the Ag. Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Ms. Alice E. Attipoe; the Deputy Secretary-General of the Public Service Workers Union, Brother Bernard Adjei, the Industrial Relations Officer of PSWU, Accra, Brother Martin Kofi Boateng, as well as the core Management members of the National Sports Authority.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Hon. Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, saluted workers of the Regional Sports Authority for their sacrifices towards the upliftment of sports in the region.

He also applauded the initiative of the Ag. Regional Director and Management of the Regional Sports Authority for acknowledging and rewarding hard workers and stakeholders in order to inspire and motivate their peers to improve upon their performances.

The Hon. Minister reiterated the commitment of government towards investing in people through sports and assured that Public Sector workers in general would be given the needed motivation to enable them to play their defined roles towards the attainment of the goals of their respective government Institutions.

Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo further commended the recipients of the awards for their meritorious services which was being recognised and appreciated. He, however, hoped they would serve as role models for other workers to emulate.

The Ag. Director-General, Ms. Alice Attipoe, on her part acknowledged and commended the achievements of the Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority in the year 2012, particularly for being the only Regional Sports Authority to independently source for funds and successfully organise its Inter-District Sports Festival in preparation towards participation in the 2013 National Unity Games without recourse to funding from the National Sports Authority.

She also commended the recipients of the awards and advised them to sustain the momentum of their punctuality and productivity. Her expectation, however, was for the general staff of the National Sports Authority to be motivated by the colossal achievements of the awarded colleagues to replicate their efforts.

The Ag. Regional Sports Director, Mr Kwame Amponfi Jnr, gave a brief progress report on the activities and achievements of the Regional Sports Authority for the year 2012.

They included the successful orientation of the various Regional Sports Associations’ Presidents and Secretaries on the new Sports Regulation (LI 1988) , supply of about 70% of groomed athletes to form the nucleus of the various national teams, successful renovation of new building structure at the Tema Sports Stadium which houses two dressing rooms, a conference hall and offices (which he said was done with the support of Tema-based Football Clubs), the establishment of regional athletes and coaches data base, acquisition of several office equipment and the successful graduation of three (3) staff with HND and Masters certificates from Accra Polytechnic and University of Ghana respectively.

According to the Ag. Regional Director, despite the numerous successes chalked, the Directorate faces a lot of challenges which include the following; inadequate funding of sports activities, lack of adequate and decent office accommodation, lack of sports equipment, non-existence of modern regional sports training facilities, lack of Regional Amalgamated Sports Bus, lack of sponsorship packages and inadequate technical personnel (sports development officer and coaches), to mention but a few.

He prayed the National Sports Authority, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, philanthropist and other relevant stakeholders to endeavour as a matter of priority, to assist the Directorate in overcoming the aforementioned constraints to guarantee greater achievements in 2013 and beyond.

Mr Kwame Amponfi Jnr. praised his staff for working tirelessly to redeem the image of the Regional Sports Authority. His appeal was rather for all to put their hands on deck to help sustain the gains of 2012 and possibly double it in 2013.

The Staff Awards ceremony was proudly sponsored by the Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority with 0.10 % of its 2012 Administrative Vote.

Other sponsors included Mr Kwame Amponfi Jnr who financed a Kente cloth for the Best Driver, while Mr Nii Akramah Tagoe of Tagoe’s Kitchen, Accra Sports Stadium, provided canned minerals for dignitaries present, Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, and all the awarded Media Partners, both Print and Electronics, which provided free promotion and coverage of the event.

The awards ceremony, which was the first of its kind in recent years, attracted over 80 participants.
