Shot in the arm for miners wives


SASK, the solidarity and development cooperation organisation of Finnish Trade Unions, has donated Euros 90,000 to support the training and development of Obuasi Mine Workers Wives Association.

The Finnish group has several dozens of development cooperation projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Approximately 1.7million Finns belong to SASK through their trade unions.

The donation, according to the secretary of the miners’ wives, will be used to support the training of members of the association in entrepreneurial skills financial and organisation management, communication, beards and soap making, decoration and grasscutter rearing.

“This will enable us to create social and economic value for ourselves, families, the communities and the Ghanaian society in general”, Mrs Doris Appiah Kubi

SASK was founded by the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions and is affiliated unions in the end of year 1986. Since then, SASK has become a widely representative solidarity body of the Finnish trade union movement with two organisations and 30nations federation as affiliated members.

As part of the Finnish in international trade union movement the function of SASK is to strengthen trade unions in every corner of the world.

Similarly, the Mine Workers Wives Association is the women affiliate of the Ghana Mine Workers Union; it currently has more than 800 members in Obuasi alone, and it also enjoys the support of the unions and the mine.

“We strive to put an end to exploiting cheap labour and child abuse. Improving dangerous working conditions is also at the core of our work. Our parents are Global Union Federations, other solidarity support organisation and trade unions”, a spokesman of the solidarity group said.
