Force India’s Perez collided with Williams counterpart Felipe Massa as the duo contested fourth place on the final lap, sending both cars careering into the barriers at turn one.

Both drivers were subsequently sent for assessment at the medical centre and, after an investigation, the stewards determined Perez had caused the incident by changing his racing line.

As a result, the Mexican will drop five places on the grid in Austria on June 22.

Marussia’s Chilton, meanwhile, has been handed a three-place penalty after taking out team-mate Jules Bianchi on the opening lap in Montreal.

The Englishman lost the rear of his car heading into turn three, sliding into his colleague and forcing both to retire from the race.

The incident was in stark contrast to a fortnight earlier, when Marussia registered their first ever Formula One points through Bianchi in Monaco.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo eventually won the frenetic Canadian race – earning his first Grand Prix triumph – with Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel joining him on the podium.
