Scrap dealer jailed for stealing fowls, decoder

A 27-year-old scrap dealer, Kwaku Addo, who pretended to be a traveller and joined a Kumasi-bound bus, has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Addo pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.
Presenting the facts of the case to the Odumase Krobo  Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Asmah Akwasi Asiedu, the prosecutor, ASP Richmond Akwasi Yeboah, said the complainant was a driver and resident at Akosombo and plied his trade between Akosombo and Kumasi while Addo was a scrap dealer based at Adjena-Jekiti in the Asuogyaman District.

According to ASP Yeboah, on January 24, 2014 at about 5.00 a.m, the complainant was driving from Akosombo to Kumasi and on reaching Akrade, Addo stopped the vehicle and boarded with four fowls, a decoder and a television set and said he was also travelling to Kumasi.

The prosecutor said when the vehicle got to Kpong, Addo told the driver that he was no longer continuing the journey to Kumasi and would therefore alight at Kpong.

According to ASP Yeboah, the driver became suspicious of Addo and drove to the Kpong Police Station and handed him over to the police.

He was detained in police cells and when he was interrogated, he confessed that he had stolen the items from Akrade.

The court ordered the police to hand over the fowls to the Nuaso Orphanage. The television set and the decoder were to be kept at the station for 30 days and be disposed of if nobody came to claim ownership of them.
