San Francisco Giants rout St Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays go back-to-back


Pitcher Tim Hudson allowed just three hits, struck out six and walked two as the Giants shut out the Cardinals in a relentless display at Busch Stadium.

Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford scored two runs apiece, while Hunter Pence, Angel Pagan, Brandon Hicks and Pablo Sandoval added runs of their own.

Joaquin Arias batted in three team-mates from three hits, while Crawford also had two RBIs.

The Giants, who are 7.5 games clear in the West thanks to a 37-20 record, have won five of their past six games.

In Toronto, the Blue Jays recorded back-to-back wins after shutting out the Kansas City Royals 4-0.

Mark Buehrle was the star of the show, pitching eight innings to become baseball’s first 10-game winner this season.

Buehrle allowed six hits and struck out three as the Blue Jays consolidated their position atop the standings in the American League’s East division.

The Blue Jays are 3.5 games clear of the New York Yankees, who slumped to a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Minnesota Twins.

In other results, the Boston Red Sox extended their winning streak to seven games courtesy of a 4-0 victory over the out-of-form Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays have lost six games on the bounce.
Manny Machado hit his first career grand slam as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Houston Astros 9-4.

The Milwaukee Brewers made light work of the hapless Chicago Cubs, winning 9-0 at Miller Park.

The Oakland Athletics downed the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 to complete a three-game sweep.

Chris Sale pitched a two-hitter to help the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 win against the San Diego Padres.
