The Swiss arrived at Roland Garros looking to bounce back from a shock defeat to Jeremy Chardy in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia earlier this month – his first appearance since wife Mirka gave birth to a second set of twins.

And the early indications were good for the fourth seed, albeit against an opponent ranked 87th in the world.

After sharing the opening four games, Federer suddenly found another gear as he claimed the next four on the bounce to see out the first set.

The second proved to be something of an endurance test for Slovakia’s Lacko, and one that he ultimately failed.

After winning the first game to love, his remaining four service games went to deuce – losing one and surviving break points in the other three.

That resolve appeared to dissipate by the third set as Lacko managed to register just two points on Federer’s serve, and was broken on two occasions as the 2009 champion booked his place in the second round.

Federer will now meet one of two qualifiers – Gastao Elias of Portugal or Argentina’s Diego Sebastian Schwartzman.
